The legends of Kathryn of Berain
By Gabrielle
Join me on our journey through time to learn about the legends of Kathryn of Berain. She was an important Tudor woman known as the MOTHER OF WALES.

As is often the case with famous figures, legends and rumours about her were circulated.
One legend said that she poured molten metal into all her husband’s ears to kill them. I don’t think this is true because someone would have seen her do it and so stopped it happening to the other three husbands.
If caught, she probably would have been sent to the Tower of London and executed.
Another legend said that on the way to her first husband’s funeral a man asked her to marry him and she said “Yes”.
On the way back from from the funeral another man was supposed to have asked her to marry him, she refused and said she had already accepted another proposal. However, if the first man died then she would marry the man who proposed to her on the way back!
I think this might be true because she married four men. She was a very rich woman and would have been a good marriage prospect for someone wanting to improve their status and finances! So they would have been racing to be the first to propose to her!
Another legend said that the skull in the painting by Adrieen van Cronenburgh was Richard Clough.
I don’t think it is true because Richard died in 1560 and the picture was painted in 1558. I believe the skull symbolises “Death is Never Far Away”. |
